Once Upon a Time, I Had Basil…

….and it was OBSCENE.
This is a photo from my last house….2 of many, many planting beds I had to feed my gardening fix. I made and froze enough pesto to last 2 years and I still gave half of it away to my neighbors. These beds got SO much sun that anything I planted there became overgrown quickly. It will be interesting to see if the deer will let me ever have anything like this again, but you know I’m going to try…maybe in the tallest part of the new beds at the side of the house.
Early spring brought lettuces, spinach, arugula…..ahhh….spring….I’m ready baby!
After a long day of digging in the dirt…I’d rinse off with a nice, hot outdoor shower. We’ve GOT to build another one of those. It was probably my favorite of all our DIYs at that house. I’d love one facing out to the forest with a Japanese zen vibe…better put that on the To Do list.

I’m so impressed with your green thumb! And even more impressed with your outdoor shower. Love it! Could I justify an outdoor shower if all I do outside is walk the dogs?
As an obvious fan…I think anyone can justify an outdoor shower by simply breathing. Nothing like it…
Sniff…sniff…..I will make a commemorative dog walk past the ole homestead when the cherry trees are blooming…sniff…sniff
Oh my goodness, I love your outdoor shower. I’ve always wanted one, and I think yours is simply gorgeous. I live in Portland, Oregon and my dream is to someday have my own outdoor shower out in the middle of the beautiful Oregon rainforests. I can’t imagine anything more tranquil.
I’ve got to figure out how to garden like this… I LOVE the idea of growing our own salad! Do you have any recommendations for a book (or other source) for a new homeowner looking to start some beds? You know, a foot in the door kind of thing. For people like me, who can’t really keep aloe alive. Seriously.
Thanks! Book recs…wow…I think the first book I used was given to me and was the Readers Digest Guide to Gardening…which I don’t actually use anymore…I also had my dad’s old Crockett’s Victory Garden from the 70′s. Still have that. I would go to the library and look at all the books and then go buy the one I thought had the best info. Also, amazingly enough, the big box bookstores always have great gardening books on clearance…know what you want to grow and go from there…”know your zone” is the best advice for starting out as well…I was always trying to prove something by trying to grow stuff not suited to my zone…it worked about 1 out of 10 times. Ah, youth.
Wow, I’ve never seen anything quite like that. What a gorgeous crop of green!
Thanks for the tips! I’m hoping to start on that in the spring. Once the inside of the house is a little less scary…
