Estate Sale

Posted: March 10th, 2010 | Filed under: Shoppin' and Junkin' | Tags: , | 2 Comments »

I picked up a few things at an estate sale this past weekend….and my favorite score is this pair of dioramas….I don’t think the photos do them justice.  They make my collection of Japanese tatebanko pale in comparison….

Lovingly carved of bone and shells, (I think) I haven’t been able to find much info on these.  Shout if you know asian crafts.

If you look closely, one of the little shell flowers has come off the tree…but no worries…these cleverly designed beauties have a slot at the top so I can slide the glass off and do my repairs without hassle.  They’ll need their frames spiffied up a bit, but isn’t that ALWAYS the way?

Lawn & Garden Show

Posted: March 9th, 2010 | Filed under: Shoppin' and Junkin' | Tags: | 4 Comments »

I really didn’t know what to expect at the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show.   Didn’t go last year, and now I needed to scout out some purveyors of cool and interesting plants.  I shouldn’t have been surprised that every garden vignette on display was tragically predictable and traditional.  A few nice plants, but all in all, MAJOR disappointment.  I have a lot more bad to show you than good.

What did surprise me was that I was the only person in my line buying tickets that was under the age of 65.  I’m sure there was another one behind me somewhere, but I hadn’t felt that youthful in quite awhile.   I’m going out on a limb and saying that Friday’s clientele had an AVERAGE age of 70…..and the smell of Ben-Gay in the air was palpable.

Here are a few lowlights of the floral gallery:

This is supposed to be the best Nashville has to offer?  Some willow branches and wire?!

I honestly don’t get this.  Is it supposed to be a scarecrow or what? Blech.

Seriously?  It’s a branch in a bucket of tulips picked up at the grocery store.  Scale?

On a positive note…there was a beautiful display of orchids….an especially nice selection of lady’s slippers…

and some gorgeous, yet pricey bonsai…

But what I really came for was the bamboo……

Met the owner of this bamboo farm north of here who has everything I will need for my new planting beds.  Super nice guy, very knowledgeable…just who I was hoping to find at this show.  When it gets a bit warmer, I’ll drive up to his farm and pick a few specimens for the house….he even grows the splendiforous Phyllostachys Nigra, or black bamboo.  Bright green leaves with a dark blackish/purplish stalk.  YES.

Where Do I Start?

Posted: March 8th, 2010 | Filed under: Booth 50, DIY | Tags: | 3 Comments »

Big weekend for ModFruGal.  I attended the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show, scored at the first decent estate sale in months, AND had nice weather, so the outdoor furniture painting extravaganza has begun.

First up was this pair of chairs I picked up for the booth.  They needed the lipstick.. some light peeling paint, but no rust and no sandblasting required…YAY. Recovered the seats with a staple gun and this project was done in a couple of hours.

I needed an injection of spring into the booth and I think these will do the trick.

Visual Tweets

I’ve been following The Museum of Modern Tweets, and now the artist, Odessa Begay, is making her Twitter inspired illustrations available on Etsy.  Her shop is here.

Anderson Cooper for $25.

Nick Jonas, also $25.

I think she’s just getting warmed up…..stay tuned.

Saturday Flea

Posted: February 27th, 2010 | Filed under: Shoppin' and Junkin' | Tags: | 3 Comments »

So sad…and COLD.  Apparently, I only missed a few booths being open yesterday b/c today still had empty spots.  24 degrees may be chump change to our northern neighbors, but our southern sensibilities like it a bit warmer..and the vendors obviously agree.  Did I get anything else today?

So, I’ll stick to my Friday strategy next month and see what’s shakin’…should be much warmer.

Friday Flea

Posted: February 26th, 2010 | Filed under: Shoppin' and Junkin' | Tags: | 2 Comments »

Flea market is back this weekend so I tried to hit them at set up time and did OK.  I’ll probably go back tomorrow since a lot of vendors simply don’t bother with Fridays.  Like here…

Someone got the memo on Pantone’s color of the year for 2010…….

More letters….

This cracked me up….

It’s a Komodo Dragon with a southern accent….I can hear it now…”Hun, just price that Kahmodah at $675…”

So what did I get?

You know I can’t resist a little asian flair, (imagine orange-ish lacquer), the chair matches my 2 couches…and I’ve just always LOVED these plants and they were about half of what I’ve seen them for everywhere else.  We’ll see what tomorrow yields, if anything.

Lottery Picks: Garden Variety

Posted: February 17th, 2010 | Filed under: Lottery Picks | Tags: | 1 Comment »

Since I’m obviously pining for spring a bit…

$3500 via V and M

I see this faux bois as my little Snow White set….nestled in the woods in a small clearing with fawns at my feet and birds singing above me…..THINK AGAIN FOOL.

$1500 via 1st Dibs

Just love ‘em and hate their price.

$2875 for these nice and groovy NOT Bertoias.

ANOTHER lovely Snow White set… hey, for $11,000, it should rake the leaves of the whole damn forest for me as well…..

Vladamir Kagan Set for $4500 at PS Modern Way….UGH!!!  Oops…I drooled a bit on my keyboard…

Concrete “Drift” bench from Unica…only $17, 265!

Stone lamps FINALLY went on sale…but to $408 each from $611….sigh….

Last, but not least..my latest design obsession… vintage Van Keppel and Green/VKG Chaises.  “Doublewides” as they call them…which is hilarious given the trailer connotation around here.  I’ll live in THIS doublewide any day thank you.

sigh…$1800 for the pair or $9 hundo each…so LOVE these.

For those new to ModFruGal, I’ll post the lottery picks disclaimer…when I win the lottery, I will spend my new wealth on these shallow and meaningless objects only when the aged parents, charitable causes and purchase of an overseas home have all been attended to…c’mon..I’m not a COMPLETE monster.

Switcheroo

Posted: February 4th, 2010 | Filed under: Shoppin' and Junkin' | Tags: , | 5 Comments »

I think I’m finally over hatin’ on my living room. For now anyway.

As much as I wish I could say that Erin’s fab post on sectionals at Design Crisis made me go out and take care of business, this little surprise was already in the works.  Remember my longing and dreaming for a groovy serpentine sectional here and here?  Well, I can’t afford those.

I managed to find a 10 seater on E-bay for $480!  I took the money I made from selling the old buffet and actually managed to find something in the budget..I was as surprised as you are…probably more. It may not be De Sede, but it’ll do pig.  It would be nice to reupholster, but that would be about $2k I’m sure, plus, the reason I bought it was because I don’t HAVE to right now. Project 2015 maybe.

The room feels much bigger now, despite this behemoth taking up the whole space.  The Minors LOVE it.

I switched out coffee tables to put our lucite and zebrawood table in here and traded the Wassilys for the Barcelonas in the bedroom.  So far (10 hours) I’m digging it.  As for the other sofas?  Thing One has the orange one, and Thing Two got the green one, so both have very grown-up sitting areas in their bedrooms now.

I think I’ll switch up some of the art and wall decor…maybe move SO somewhere else…You know how Decor-ADHD and non-committal I am, so tomorrow, it will be different I’m sure.
