Best Find

March 5, 2015

When Chairish asked me to do a post on my best find, I was flattered and terrified all at once.* I am TERRIBLE at picking favorite anythings. 95% of my furnishings are vintage/previously loved, so how do you even qualify such a thing? Is it the piece that has the most value in relation to what I paid? Is it the most rare? It’s like asking a parent to pick their favorite kid, you can’t – you love them all equally, yet uniquely.

Then it hit me – the piece that has probably had the most impact in my home, and how I have decorated around it, seems to be what I should choose. But it has no provenance that I am aware of; shouldn’t I choose something with a pedigree like my Barcelona or Wassily chairs?! Nope. At the end of the day, our no name sofa made our house a home. We’ve had it almost 5 years now, and no regrets.

The architecture of our house called for something with a 70’s mod vibe, and I had envisioned De Sede and Pantonova in the living room, but my budget had other ideas. I scoured Ebay, flea markets, antique malls, estate sales, and craigslist (pre-Chairish era) for months until I found it, lonely in Florida, photographed in front of a dumpster. $480 of curving allure. While that’s not dirt cheap, it’s a LOT of sofa for under $500 in my opinion. Ebay did not fail me.

It seats 10, but we find most often it seats 6-8 and everyone feels comfy and not crowded. It had no tags, labels or identifiers of any kind and I have never been able to find another one online or otherwise, so I am still in the dark (if you know – please share!!) but it anchors our home.

When we first brought it home, I didn’t have the right table to go in the center, so that evolved over time…

This is where we are lately….the sofa works best with the 3 level swiveling brass and glass table. Friends can swing a level out closer to them to hold food and drinks, and for family gaming.vintage curved sectional modfrugal

Switcheroos

May 6, 2013

While we haven’t been making any more progress in the pantry, I decided to rearrange furniture and art everywhere. At least that is something that can be done and finished, until I do it again.

For those who participated in the Moon vs. Mushroom lamp vote on Instagram/FB..the Moon won in the end, simply because I liked the Mushroom in the dining room. I need to reshoot all these rooms in their entirety, but it has been so dark out for so long, I got tired of waiting. When the light returns…better photos will emerge.

And a major art rearrange in this corner…not loving it, but am rolling with it for now.

I have some fun things I hope I can share with you soon, but I can’t yet…in the meantime we are scrambling to make these things happen…cryptic, I know, but it hopefully explains our lack of progress on other fronts.

I have thrown up a few of these updated pics on the house tour since I realized they were pretty old, but when I re-shoot in good flat light, I’ll swap them out since these really are terrible. Please let the wet darkness end……

Mini Tour Outtakes

March 13, 2012

Thanks again to all of you who left such lovely comments on the mini tour…you really made this Nervous Nellie feel so much more at ease, and I’m grateful to have such awesome friends on these here interwebs.

I thought you might have fun checking out a few of the snaps showing some of the changes around here that didn’t make the cut!

I’ve purposely not shown much of the kids rooms because I feel like it’s invading their privacy, but I relented since we were doing a post about living with kids…they have to live somewhere, right?!

For this tour, I didn’t declutter as much as I usually do..I kinda let it be, especially in the kids rooms.

You can tell I was “keepin’ it real” here…the cluttered bulletin board etc..was not cleaned up …probably should have been!

The blue horses have moved to the dining room for the moment, but you know me, they’ll be somewhere else in a couple of months.

Can you believe it? No Otto photo bombs! Only because he was here while I was shooting…

He finally got tired of my shooing him behind me and decided to take advantage of my preoccupation by sneaking up to the boys rooms. Luckily it only cost us a pair of socks.

Switcheroo: Ninja Edition

October 4, 2011

My Facebook and Twitter followers might have heard me bemoan the fact that I might have to get rid of my faux lacquer asian tables.  The very ones that went on to become famous.  I’ve moved them around quite a bit, but they are kind of large to go just anywhere.  They were not working out as night table storage because we are people who need drawers.  Too messy..no one needs to see lip balm and melatonin, right?!  TMI.

So…. when I scored some bedside tables on Craigslist last week, the asian tables were back in flux, and with the sale approaching, I started to worry the CC might push the subject of selling them.  I simply wasn’t ready for that.  My solution?  Find a place in the house for them QUICKLIKE.  I became a rearranging ninja, and after many room redos, I managed to save them…for now. They are pushed together to serve as a long table between the rattan at the fireplace.

So they are safe…. for the moment.  The next time a favorite household item is threatened, I will quietly emerge from the walls….
