Futile Quest

wearstler 70's couch

So….ever since I saw the photos of Kelly Wearstler’s OTT Beverly Hills home, I’ve been trying to source her drawing room sofas.  Weeks of searching high and low.  All the Vogue article said was “Wearstler upholstered the seventies sofas in soft leather.”  Thanks guys.

Why am I so intent on sourcing the designer of these sofas….that’s a GREAT question.  In reality this is a lottery pick post.  Those sofas were probably outrageously expensive, even with stains and cigarette burns on them….and found only in Europe.  She’s furnishing a multi-million dollar estate….I’m, well…not.

In my unhealthy obsession with these, I have had a lot of fun amid the frustration.  Pouring over everything from old photos of Cini Boeri’s work (below) to today’s take on similar looks.

…and don’t even get me going on De Sede…..

So…who made those damn sofas???? Maybe it’s obvious to all design junkies but me…if you know…please share and put me out of my misery.

Booth 50…or SO

So….you are looking at the before shots of Booth 50 in the Downtown Antique Mall in Nashville.  I’m dipping my toe into a little retail.

It’s an antique dive…just the way I like ’em…dusty, dingy and obnoxiously loud when the trains roll by 4 feet from the building.  It’s packed with treasures.  I’ve only lived here a year and a half, but in my wanderings thus far, this place has the best vintage modern selection in town.  Pre to Post Modern ties for grooviness of merchandise, but it’s tiny with a very limited selection.  Yes, I’m biased, but that’s why I wanted these guys to let me play with them…I figured I’d fit in best there.

This week I will put some lipstick on her and fill her up.  Formerly a 40’s-50’s kitchen booth, that teal and yellow must go.  I get great natural light in this little wedge which is pretty rare, given what a dark warehouse it is overall.  I’m pretty lucky.

Thing Two will certainly think I’m Booth # SO.  Poi-fect.

I’m very excited to get going...so much to do…

SO…..

….I went to the flea market at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds this weekend.  I’ve never seen SO many people there before…I guess with all the rain, everyone had cabin fever and decided to bundle up and head out.

I was toodling along, and just as I turned the corner past the mule barn…

I saw them….

the letters at flea

I loved them, but did I really need them?  I hadn’t seen everything yet, SO I kept walking…and found myself back in front of them 20 minutes later.  I walked on again to check out the last building I hadn’t been in….when I saw something SO rad…..

I was in love….driven to distraction.  The stag horn sheep I never knew I wanted.  What I didn’t want was the price.

I really couldn’t haggle since I was only willing to pay less than half that…can’t be a TOTAL ass….

SO…..I marched back over to the letters and decided that it was destiny they should still have an “s” and “o”, since I’m a blatant over-user of the word “SO”.  Haggled to $60, which was still too much…but, since I couldn’t have that stag horn…

Third time’s a charm.

UPDATE:  Thing Two thought it was “50”…. anticlimactic, no?

A Plan for the Handy

Handy froogs will really dig this.  PlanCanvas sells plans for building modern furniture…most of which can be made with a single sheet of plywood.  The majority of the designs run about $4.99…you also get a material list and even a link to buy necessary tools on each plan listing.  I think it’s a great concept and I look forward to seeing how they evolve.  Check out these cool side tables…

$4.99 for the plans to build this...
